Who else would love to create a brand new community site or
social network, out of thin air... literally in the space of about 48
hours, and do it 100% for free? The funny thing is, years ago... the
idea of programming a site like Facebook, or Match.Com, or Stack
Overflow or Yahoo Answers or any other place where people of PASSION
come together to share interests and information would be a multi
million dollar endeavor.
Today? If you are a coach, consultant, teacher or trainer or simply have a PASSION for a particular niche or topic, you can literally create a brand new community, or social network using free blog tools or open source software, and literally need very little experience to do it.
I've "done" many different types of communities in my own business, and the truth is, it literally gets easier and easier with each passing year. More tools come on the market. More technologies become available to the masses. And less of a learning curve is required to implement all of the above... even if you are pretty much a tech dummy like myself.
There are LOTS of ways to do all of this of course. But I'm going to share 3 of my favorite ways below, mostly because they are FAST, fun... and 100% free!
1 - Tumblr Communities
Most people use Tumblr as a blog platform. That's 100% cool... and it works amazingly well for doing exactly that. The little known thing about Tumblr in the business world is, they have 2 very unique features that are built in, that can turn a normal tumblog into a user generated content portal, literally with the tick of a box.
The "Ask ME Anything" feature, and the user submission form, both allow your audience to create content for your site, by either asking questions, or by submitting stories, and some of the mot popular Tumblr communities in the world are 100% user created content. (a pretty EASY job if you are running the community!)
2 - Buddypress
Buddypress turns WordPress (the most popular open source blog platform) into a robust social community, very similar to Facebook... in under 5 minutes. It's free, you can literally install it from your dashboard, and you can have groups, private messaging, forums, activity walls, friends, likes and all sorts of other advanced functionality that brings people of PASSION together to share. (some BP functions do require extra plugins, but more are free... and more are added every day to boot)
3 - Q and A Templates and Plugin's
Again, there is nice mix of free and paid plugins that both will turn your existing blog into a Yahoo Answers or Stack Overflow type of community, where your readers and users can ASK (and answer) questions about any and every niche under the sun. These sites can rank very, very well in the SERPS as well, and are a great way to building a BIG brand name in your niche... without really having to do a lot of the heavy lifting, or content creation yourself!
